As a Madison wedding planner, I’ve seen how much the right venue can shape the entire wedding day. For couples dreaming of getting married by the water, these are five Madison-area waterfront wedding venues worth considering.
Bishops Bay Country Club
Located in Middleton on the shores of Lake Mendota, Bishops Bay Country Club offers a waterfront setting with views across the lake toward Madison and the Capitol. The club hosts weddings and other private events for approximately 30 to 300 guests, making it an option for a range of wedding sizes.
The setting is especially appealing for couples who want the atmosphere of a lakeside wedding without giving up the polished feel of a country club celebration. The lakefront ceremony area makes the water a major part of the backdrop, and a covered lakeside pavilion provides reception space for larger celebrations.
There are also plenty of opportunities to step outside for waterfront portraits as the light changes throughout the evening.

The Edgewater
For couples who want waterfront views while staying right in downtown Madison, The Edgewater Hotel offers a unique combination of lakefront scenery and city convenience.
The hotel sits directly on Lake Mendota and offers several indoor and outdoor spaces for weddings. The Grand Ballroom features large windows overlooking the lake, while its terraces provide outdoor space right outside the ballroom. The Grand Plaza offers an even larger outdoor setting with expansive Lake Mendota views.
One of the biggest advantages of The Edgewater is the ability to create more of a wedding weekend experience. Guest rooms, restaurants, spa services, rehearsal dinner possibilities, and wedding spaces are all available on the property.
Its downtown location also opens up plenty of options for photos beyond the waterfront. Couples can incorporate gardens, downtown streets, or Capitol views into their portraits before returning to the lakefront celebration.

Memorial Union
For couples with a connection to UW-Madison or those who simply love classic Madison landmarks, Memorial Union offers a waterfront wedding setting filled with history and local character.
Memorial Union sits directly on Lake Mendota and dates back to 1928. Inside, spaces such as Great Hall, Tripp Commons, and Main Lounge offer different settings for wedding celebrations, while the surrounding campus and lakefront provide plenty of opportunities for photos.
There are a few important logistical details to know before falling in love with the venue. A current Wisconsin Union membership is required to host an event, and wedding spaces can be reserved up to 18 months in advance. Wisconsin Union Catering also handles food and beverages for events in Union spaces.
For Badger alumni in particular, Memorial Union can bring an extra layer of meaning to the wedding day. The lake, historic building, campus, and familiar Madison surroundings can all become part of the celebration.

Monona Terrace

Monona Terrace describes itself as Madison’s only rooftop lakeside wedding venue, with rooftop areas available for ceremonies and social events overlooking Lake Monona. Inside, couples can choose from spaces including the Madison Ballroom, Community Terrace, and other rooms with different capacities and layouts.
There is also an architectural element that makes this venue particularly distinctive. Frank Lloyd Wright originally proposed his vision for the civic center in 1938, and the building that eventually opened in 1997 connects the shore of Lake Monona with downtown Madison.
The location is also convenient for couples who want a variety of wedding photos. In addition to the lake and rooftop, the Capitol and downtown Madison are nearby.

Olin Park Pavilion
Couples looking for something more relaxed and naturally beautiful should also consider Olin Park Pavilion.
Located in Olin Park along Lake Monona, the historic pavilion dates back to 1884 and offers an open-air setting with views of both the lake and downtown Madison. The City of Madison lists approximately 15 six-foot banquet tables and 75 chairs as included seating, and amplified sound is permitted with the appropriate permit.
This is a very different experience from a full-service hotel, country club, or convention venue. Couples considering a park pavilion wedding should think carefully about the extra logistics involved, including catering, rentals, décor, weather, restrooms, setup, cleanup, and the flow of the day. The pavilion does not have a kitchenette, and its restrooms are located in a separate building.
For the right wedding, however, that flexibility can be part of the appeal. The lakefront park setting creates a casual, scenic atmosphere with plenty of room to make the celebration feel personal.
Consider Olin Park Pavilion for Lake Monona views, an open-air atmosphere, historic character, a more relaxed wedding style, and couples comfortable coordinating additional event logistics.
Lake Mendota vs. Lake Monona Wedding Venues
When comparing waterfront wedding venues in Madison, it can help to start with the kind of scenery and atmosphere that feels right.
Bishops Bay, The Edgewater, and Memorial Union all offer access to Lake Mendota, but each creates a very different experience. Bishops Bay has the feel of a lakeside country club, The Edgewater combines the water with a luxury downtown hotel setting, and Memorial Union brings historic UW-Madison character.
Monona Terrace and Olin Park Pavilion overlook Lake Monona. Monona Terrace offers a more modern downtown experience with its rooftop and indoor event spaces, while Olin Park provides a more relaxed park setting with views back toward the city.
There isn’t one type of waterfront venue that works for every wedding. Touring several different styles can make it much easier to determine what feels right.
Don’t Forget About the Sunset
One of the biggest benefits of choosing a waterfront wedding venue is the opportunity for evening photos.
When creating the wedding day timeline, I recommend checking the sunset time and leaving a little room for the couple and photographer to step outside around golden hour. It doesn’t need to turn into another long portrait session. Even 10 or 15 minutes away from the reception can provide a completely different set of photos.
The changing light over Lake Mendota or Lake Monona can create a beautiful backdrop, especially when combined with views of the Capitol or downtown Madison.
What to Ask When Touring a Waterfront Wedding Venue
Beautiful lake views are important, but they shouldn’t be the only thing considered during a venue tour. Ask what happens if rain or high winds make an outdoor ceremony impossible. Find out when vendors can begin setup, whether the venue provides tables and chairs, how catering and alcohol are handled, and what time everything needs to be removed at the end of the night.
It is also worth asking about guest parking, transportation, accessibility, noise restrictions, outdoor music, photography access, and whether other events could be taking place nearby on the wedding day.
For venues with both indoor and outdoor spaces, ask to see the actual rain backup location during the tour. A good weather plan should still feel like a wedding the couple would be happy to have, rather than simply a place everyone can fit if it rains.
Planning a Waterfront Wedding in Madison
Madison’s lakes make it possible to create a waterfront wedding without leaving the city.
